The gastronomy of Cuevas del Becerro is rich with locally-grown products such as honey, cheese, and extra virgin olive oil, as well as a wide range of homemade sweets and pork products like sausage or ham. In general, the recipes of Cuevas del Becerro are very similar to those of the surrounding villages in that stews, typical of mountainous regions, are also very common.
Hiking Routes
“Caminito del rey” The King’s Path
From Cuevas del Becerro there are two ways to get to The King’s Path; by cab or by car, which is 44 minutes away.
The King’s Path is an outdoor walkway built in the walls of the Gaitanes Gorge between the municipalities of Ardales, Alora, and Antequera, in the province of Malaga, an autonomous community of Andalusia, Spain. It is a three-kilometer pedestrian footbridge with more than 4.8 kilometers of additional accesses. The path is attached to the rock inside a canyon with one-meter-wide sections and hangs 105 meters high above the river on vertical walls.
Cuevas del Becerro River Source:
Just a few meters from the town center in Cuevas del Becerro you will find the source of the river where the spring that runs through part of the municipality later joins the Guadalteba River. The best time to visit is autumn when you can see how this natural spectacle “erupts,” as the locals say.
Castle Routes:
To the south of Cuevas del Becerro, you can see a small hill, the Cerro of Castillón, where the ancient fortress of El Castillejo sits and presides over the town. Possibly it may have been a place of defense with a strategic view of the Tower of Viján, of Cañete la Real, La Torrecilla, of Teba, and the Tower of Ortegicar, also in Cañete la Real. Although small in size, it surrounds an oval/shaped space. The entire top of the hill was protected by a wall made of masonry, which is now completely demolished. A small settlement extends past the fortress; which according to found ceramics, can be dated back to the ninth century.
You may also be interested in seeing other interesting monuments and elements of the cultural heritage of Cuevas del Becerro including The House of the Marquises (La Casa de Los Marqueses), the Antique Mill or the Extra Virgin Olive Oil Mill (El Molina Antiguo) or the Flour Mill (Molina Harinero de Cubo).
